Perfect Your Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Brewing a great cup of coffee at home isn’t just about the beans you choose (although we want you to choose Lancaster County Coffee!). It’s also about balance. One of the most common reasons coffee tastes too bitter, too weak, or just “off” is because the coffee-to-water ratio isn’t quite right. The good news? Mastering this ratio is simple, and once you do, every cup can taste like it came from your favorite café.

The Golden Standard: 1:16

Professional coffee brewers and baristas rely on a standard ratio of 1 part coffee to 16 parts water. In practice, that means using 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water. For example:

  • 20 grams of coffee = 320 grams (or milliliters) of water
  • 30 grams of coffee = 480 grams (or milliliters) of water

This 1:16 ratio extracts the sweet spot of flavors—bringing out natural notes in the beans while avoiding bitterness from over-extraction or dullness from under-extraction.

Why Ratios Matter

Coffee is full of natural oils and compounds that create flavor. Too much coffee in relation to water, and your brew can taste overpowering or bitter. Too little, and you’ll end up with a weak, flat cup. By sticking to a consistent ratio, you give the water just the right amount of coffee to work with—unlocking a balanced, full-bodied taste every time.

Measuring Made Easy

The most accurate way to brew is by using a digital kitchen scale. Since coffee beans vary in size and density, scoops can be inconsistent. A scale eliminates the guesswork and lets you repeat your perfect cup again and again.

Don’t have a scale? A good rule of thumb is about 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water. While not as precise as weighing, it gets you close to the ideal 1:16 balance.

Adjusting for Taste

The 1:16 ratio is a starting point, not a rule carved in stone. Like your coffee a little stronger? Try 1:15. Prefer it lighter? Shift to 1:17. Once you know the standard, you can fine-tune your brew to match your taste buds.
