Weigh Your Coffee and Water: Brew with Precision

If you’ve ever brewed coffee that tasted too weak one day and too bitter the next, chances are the problem wasn’t the beans—it was the measurement. Many home brewers rely on scoops or tablespoons to portion their coffee, but the truth is that volume measurements are inconsistent.

At Lancaster County Coffee Roasters, we believe that a little precision goes a long way. That’s why we recommend weighing both your coffee and your water. With an affordable kitchen scale, you can transform your pour-over (or any brew method) into a consistent, café-quality experience at home.

Why Volume Isn’t Reliable

Coffee beans vary in size, density, and roast level. A tablespoon of a light roast may hold fewer grams of coffee than a tablespoon of a dark roast, which means your scoop might not give you the same strength from one bag to the next. Water is no different. Measuring by “cups” doesn’t account for exact weight. When it comes to brewing, these small inconsistencies add up and affect flavor in the cup.

Why a Scale Works Better

Using a scale eliminates the guesswork. With coffee and water measured by weight, you can lock in the ideal ratio every time—most often 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water (1:16). That ratio gives you a balanced extraction, pulling out the right flavors without tipping into sourness or bitterness.

Once you’ve weighed your ingredients, you’ll notice that your coffee tastes consistently better; no surprises, no “off” cups, just great coffee day after day.

How to Use a Scale for Coffee

  1. Place your pour-over brewer or French press on the scale and tare it (set it to zero).
  2. Add freshly ground coffee until you reach your desired weight.
  3. Tare again, then slowly pour water until the scale reaches the correct ratio.
  4. Brew as usual and enjoy the difference.

An Affordable Upgrade

The best part? You don’t need anything fancy. A simple, affordable digital kitchen scale is all it takes to make this step part of your daily routine. It’s a small investment that pays off in every cup.

At Lancaster County Coffee Roasters, we believe great coffee is about the details. Stop guessing, start weighing, and taste the difference precision makes.
